Red Wings are back

There have been a few Red Wings special sections this year, and here comes another one. Check section RW of today's paper for the Wings preview section designed by Matt Mowery.

Bird Droppings

I had fun with this headline the other night. It just seemed appropriate, since a dropped toss led directly to the Tigers beating the Blue Jays. The other headline I thought of was "Stretch-run split." I liked "Bird Droppings" better.

New-look NFL stats

As you may have seen today (Monday), we have returned to running full NFL box scores in Monday editions after we eliminated them last season. The stats and standings come to us courtesy of The Associated Press in a pre-packaged image we place on the page at night.
You may have already noticed the Lions box score appears twice in the paper and 'DETROIT' isn't bold-faced in the standings, but that's a minor inconvenience considering all the NFL copy that needs proofreading on Sundays.
Hope this helps all the fantasy football buffs. Enjoy!

Hall of Fame sarcasm

I sarcastically used the headline "Sloan, Stockton entering Hall, too" because I feel that they, along with David Robinson, were overshadowed as part of the HoF class going in with
Michael Jordan. It was going to happen to anyone who went in with M.J., but I thought the headline fits the mood.
You'll also notice on further inspection (by clicking the page to enlarge the image), in the agate under "On this date," actual sporting events have been removed from every year except 2001.

Lions preview two-fer

Hopefully you were lucky enough to not only see the special cover of today's (Thursday) sports section, a four-page Lions preview wrap, but also special section 'F' tucked in the back. The section features content by Lions beat writer Paula Pasche and was designed by Matt Mowery. Keep up on Lions news by reading the
Lions Lowdown and read columnist Pat Caputo's take on the team all season long at
The Open Book.
Trouble with baseball?

You may have noticed we haven't been running baseball box scores and we've missed Tigers games a couple times this week. We're sorry for the inconvenience, but earlier-than-usual deadlines have forced us to run things a day late, including our high school coverage. It's only temporary, however, and we will return to normalcy in our Sunday print edition.

College football special section
Smack-dab in the middle of today's (Friday) section is a special college football preview prepared once again by designer extraordinaire Matt
Mowery.
